Open Workspace...is it Right For You?
The idea of working all day in an open work space, without co-workers or a boss interrupting every little task, sounds dreamy to me. The idea that I can wake up at the time I want, feel rested, have a leisurely coffee or tea and get to my desk when I say, sounds ideal. The idea of creating my day, declaring when I will work on specific tasks and even when I will take breaks, sounds perfect. I mean, with all that freedom and time, how could it be anything less than perfect?Well, that depends who you are and how you operate. This type of freedom works best with people who are able to create personal boundaries and accountability. If you think this is right up your alley, and answer yes to many of the points below, then an open space may be just right for you.
I am able to focus even when there are distractions around me.
I can create a rigid schedule for myself.
I create clear boundaries regarding when my work day begins and when it ends.
I am able to say no to requests when needed.
I feel motivated and inspired by the work I do.
How did you do with those points? If you said yes to all of them, you can successfully work in an open space environment. If you said yes to most of them, you can be successful as well, but may need to realign the structure of how you operate on a daily basis. If you answered no to several of these, yet can’t afford your own office, there are strategies that can help set you up for success.
Create daily rituals for yourself: a set wake up time, office time, and even break time added to your calendar will help tremendously.
Create a daily plan. This one is critical because even with the best intentions, we can become quickly overwhelmed without concrete plans.
Easily distracted? Try listening to instrumental music that won’t interrupt your thinking on headphones, or choose noise cancelling head phones for complete silence.
Trouble with accountability? Set reminders on your phone for beginning and endings of tasks.
Create detailed plans each day. Include tasks and time lines as well to help with time management.
Get support. Work with a Business Coach, join a networking or Mastermind Group!
Having others to share weekly challenges with, as well as suggested strategies will help you become more efficient and effective no matter where you work.
With the right tools, you CAN be successful in an open work space. As a matter of fact, with the right tools and support you can be even more effective and successful than in an office surrounded by co-workers!
